The nightmare scenario of injuries, damage, and product contamination must be avoided at all costs. This is why the National Fire Protection Association created NFPA 69: a strict set of requirements for systems that prevent and control explosions in enclosures that contain concentrations of flammable substances.

The rotary valves in your dry bulk solids processing installation are examples of such a system. Indeed, they are there for the prevention and control of fire and explosions. But unfortunately, for many manufacturers the NFPA requirements result in the production of generic rotary valves with limited applications and without possibilities for customization – leading to sub-optimal production output.

So should dry bulk solids handling industries compromise on performance?

Safety and NFPA-compliance are always #1, but to ensure optimal performance, we offer thoroughly tested rotary valves with different specifications that can be tailored to your needs:

 

• Clearance up to 0.4 mm (0.016 in) – no material blockage required, reducing wear and thermal expansion risks.

• Blades in metal or polyurethane, can be fitted with scraper, chamfered, or additional knifes.

• Bearings configured inboard or outboard, depending on sealing and process needs.

• Use for organic dusts (St 1, 2 & 3)

• Kst-Values up to 380 bar x m/s

• P-max values up to 10 bar

• Rotating speed of the rotors up to 30 rpm

• Certification – based on explosion testing, validated by notified bodies, and compliant with both NFPA 69 and ATEX 2014/34/EU

To ensure NFPA compliance, DMN-WESTINGHOUSE engaged an external testing center to subject our rotary valves to the most extensive testing ever for (potentially) explosive environments. The rotary valves were tested for blocking flame passage and explosions in all sorts and combinations, to confirm that a system is truly safe during an explosion.
